A group of 18 local ethnic media in Los Angeles area gathered at the Los Angeles Central Library for an insightful roundtable discussion on their role in promoting citizenship in their communities.
Media leaders gathered with our Los Angeles partners to learn about the many benefits of citizenship, upcoming changes to the application form, and the multiple free citizenship workshops happening all over Los Angeles.
It was an opportunity for the Los Angeles public library to talk about their involvement in the New Americans Campaign by offering English classes and providing space for events. Four new citizens also spoke of their reasons for becoming citizens – from being able to hold dual citizenship and keep land back home in Tonga, to being free from deportation.
It was also an opportunity for local ethnic media to offer up new partnerships and coverage of the important work that the New Americans Campaign is doing in Los Angeles and nationwide.
“You are our gateway. You are the way to reach the people that we cannot reach,” said Nasim Khansari, citizenship network manager at Asian-Americans Advancing Justice.
