Today marks the start of Citizenship Month, a 30-day celebration culminating in Citizenship Day on Saturday, Sept. 17.

In more than 18 cities nationwide, New Americans Campaign partners will host free workshops to help hundreds of citizenship-eligible lawful permanent residents (LPRs) take the critical next step to apply for citizenship.

“There are many reasons to become a citizen – citizens stand to earn up to 11 percent more in wages over a lifetime, they have access to more and better-paying jobs, and they can help their children under 18 become citizens,” said Eric Cohen, Executive Director of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, the lead organization for the New Americans Campaign. “But it also goes beyond that – citizenship gives you an equal voice because citizens can vote. It empowers you to exert control over what happens to your family and community. This Citizenship Day, we’re helping hundreds reach that opportunity.”

This year, Citizenship Day will be observed on Friday, Sept. 16. Please visit the New Americans Campaign calendar of events for a full list of activities taking place throughout the month.
