Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, ”Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’”
As Americans across the country answer that call in January and, specifically, on today’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, the New Americans Campaign is taking this time to celebrate its volunteers who make an impact on the lives of legal permanent residents (LPRs) nationwide all year long.
From helping at citizenship workshops to conducting office work with our partner organizations, NAC volunteers play an integral role in the success of the campaign by donating their time and talent in a variety of ways.
There are several areas of volunteer opportunities for individuals with specific experience and training, including immigration attorneys or Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) representatives, as well as attorneys with experience outside of immigration. Volunteers assist with paperwork and application completion and answer important legal questions.
Event support volunteers also comprise a large portion of the NAC volunteer force. These individuals support citizenship workshops, helping LPRs register and check in and supporting the overall operation.
Many of these volunteers have their own citizenship story that has inspired their decision to volunteer with the NAC. And, while volunteer roles may differ among the NAC sites, one thing is universal: We value these individuals and their importance to our work.
The NAC ensures the quality of service to our LPR clients by equipping volunteers with the necessary training and tools to make them successful in their individual roles.
As King said, “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.” Many thanks to our volunteers who support millions of LPRs on their path toward citizenship and help them achieve their American dream.
